Two perennial favorite Talbot County events are taking place in June. Plan to come for one or both and then stay overnight with us. During the weekend of June 13-15, the 27th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival comes to St. Michaels. More than 100 antique boats and vintage race craft are docked at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s campus. This year, the festival will feature Chesapeake Bay-built workboats. The CBMM will be offering boat rides through the festival. There will also be boatbuilding demonstrations and workshops and a maritime-themed market. There’s also a juried art show, and, of course, plenty of food and drink. There’s even a rum bar. But don’t let that last tidbit worry you. This event is completely kid friendly. There is an admission fee, which includes entrance to the fabulous CBMM. Right now, you can take in a timely exhibit about the War of 1812 (the British attacked these parts in 1814).
On June 21st, newer, less-durable watercraft are the stars of the show at the 26th Annual Oxford Cardboard Boat Races. The event is held along the shores of the Tred Avon River so that contestants can navigate their creations in shallow water (as they are likely to sink at some point). Featured races include the Fast Race; the Battle of the Brave (the longest race); and the Funny Race, where oddly-shaped craft compete for a coveted trophy. There's also a children's race, where kids compete on a shortened course.
